Men's Flannels: The Layer That Carries Fall
Men's flannels are the hardest-working layer of the cool half of the year: a shirt, a jacket, and a personality move in one garment. The difference between a flannel you live in and one that hangs untouched comes down to fabric. Brushed cotton that's soft the day you buy it, not after twenty washes, with enough weight to block wind but not so much that it only works in Flagstaff.
What to Look For
Run your hand inside the shirt; the brushing should be on both faces. Check the buttons hit without gapping, the shirttail hem works untucked, and the shoulder seams sit where your shoulders actually are. Flannel, Overshirt, or Jacket-Shirt?
The lines blur, so here's the shop shorthand. A flannel is a shirt: soft, buttonable, wearable against skin. An overshirt is a flannel that ate a jacket, heavier fabric and cut a size roomier, built to go over a tee or even a light flannel. The jacket-shirt adds quilting or lining and replaces outerwear entirely down here. Buy them in that order as the weather demands; most desert guys never actually need step three.

Keep It Soft
Flannel care is easy to get right and easier to get wrong. Cold wash, low or no dryer heat, and skip the fabric softener; it coats the brushed fibers and kills the loft that makes flannel feel like flannel. Are flannels warm enough for winter?
