Men's Hats by Fit
Shop by how the hat's built — crown height, panel count and structure.
High crown hats sit taller with a bold, old-school trucker profile. Mid crowns are the everyday middle ground — structured enough to hold their shape, low enough to wear anywhere. Six panel caps follow the head for a cleaner, sportier line, and unstructured hats skip the stiff front panel for a broken-in, dad-hat feel. Find your fit from brands like Seager, Sendero, Melin and Branded Bills — order online or try them on in Old Town Scottsdale or downtown Flagstaff.
How to measure your head
One measurement, and you only need to do it once. Run a soft tape around your head just above your ears and across the middle of your forehead — where a hat actually sits, not up on the crown. Keep it snug but not tight. Most guys land between 22" and 24".
If you're between two sizes on a fitted hat, size up. A hat that's slightly loose sits fine. A hat that's slightly tight leaves a mark on your forehead and you stop wearing it.
Adjustable or fitted?
Most of what we carry adjusts, so if you don't know your head size and don't want to measure, buy adjustable.
Adjustable — snapback, strapback or buckle. One size, and the closure covers a range. This is the majority of our wall. American Needle, our largest adjustable brand, publishes this:
| Size | Closure | Closed | Fully open | Adjustable range |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| One Size Fits Most | Snapback | 24 1/2" | 26"–27" | approx. 2 1/2" |
Fitted — sized, no closure, no give. You need your measurement. Melin runs on their own three-size system rather than standard US sizes:
| Size | US hat size | Circumference (in) | Circumference (cm) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Small | 7"–7 1/4" | 22"–22 5/8" | 56.5–58.5 cm |
| Classic | 7 3/8"–7 5/8" | 22 3/4"–23 1/2" | 58.5–60.5 cm |
| XL | 7 3/4"–8 1/4" | 23 5/8"–24 1/2" | 61 cm and up |
Note that Classic is Melin's middle size, not their entry size. Most guys are a Classic.
Good to know
- Straw has almost no give. Wool felt relaxes a little with wear. Cotton twill splits the difference.
- A stiff brim softens over time; a soft brim never stiffens. If you like a flat brim, buy flat.
- Cotton hats can tighten slightly after a wash. If you're on the edge of two fitted sizes and you wear hats hard in the heat, go up.
- We don't have published measurements for every hat brand we carry. Almost all of those are adjustable, so it rarely matters — but if you want a number before you buy, call the shop and we'll measure the actual hat.
